Blue and white porcelain, is a high-temperature underglaze decoration which is the essence of Chinese ceramic art.
The earliest archaeological discoveries of blue and white porcelain shards originate from the Tang Dynasty ruins of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, using cobalt blue pigment imported from West Asia for underglaze painting. In the 14th century (Yuan Dynasty), the technique matured at the Hutian Kiln in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, breaking through the traditional style of monochrome porcelain. It combined the Yuan Dynasty's fondness for white and blue with Islamic cultural characteristics, resulting in a bold and unrestrained style. During the Ming Dynasty, blue and white porcelain became the mainstream, with imported "Sumali Blue" pigment used during the Yongle and Xuande periods, producing a rich and vibrant color. The technique reached its peak during the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty.
