Chinese calligraphy brush carries profound cultural significance, poetic sentiment, and continuous blessings.
There is a poem about Chinese calligraphy brush:
The fine wolf hairs flow smoothly through the fingers, a touch of ink staining the Xuan paper.
The Chinese calligraphy brush originated in the Neolithic Age and represents the soft side of calligraphy art. It was standardized during the period between Warring States period. In Qin Dynasty, it becomes the core tool in Chinese calligraphy and painting. The handle is typically made of bamboo, but precious materials such as ivory, jade, and rosewood are also used. The brush tip is made from the hair of animals such as rabbits, sheep, and wolves, possessing a "softness" that allows for the expressive power of calligraphy, where "the intention precedes the brush." It is also the first of the "Four Treasures of the Study." In traditional Chinese culture, parents would use the first hair clipped from their infant to make a "baby hair brush" (also known as a "scholar's brush"), symbolizing wisdom, academic success (the word for "prosperity" is a homophone for "fa"), and good fortune—a treasure to be passed down through generations. The Wenchang brush, on the other hand, is a feng shui item symbolizing improved academic performance, academic achievements, and career success.
